Disclosure: the roofing contractor, and the limits of this service
Gloucester Roofing is a call and enquiry service for roof repair, replacement and storm damage work on homes in Gloucester, Gloucester County and the nearby Middle Peninsula and lower-York communities. Each enquiry is referred to one independent licensed local roofing contractor — the partner. That contractor alone is responsible for the inspection, the written quote, the crew, the materials, the workmanship, any warranty offered and any permit it files. No one acting for Gloucester Roofing inspects, repairs or replaces a roof.
Virginia licenses contractors through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation’s Board for Contractors, by licence class and by classification, with roofing held as a speciality. The obligation to hold the correct licence for the work, to carry its own insurance and to satisfy the Board rests entirely with the contractor. Gloucester Roofing and this website hold no contractor licence and no insurance for roofing work, claim none, and do not represent that any contractor’s licence, insurance or record has been verified by them.
Any homeowner may ask the contractor for its licence number at any time, through the telephone line on this site or directly when the contractor makes contact, and may ask to see the licence before work is agreed. The number is not published on these pages, to protect the privacy of a small private business, and any number given can be checked on DPOR’s public licence lookup. Whether a particular re-roof requires a building permit is a question for the Gloucester County building inspection office, and insurance coverage for storm damage is decided by your own insurer under your policy.

Prices are estimates
Price ranges are typical estimates for our service area in 2026. They are not quotes or offers. Your price is confirmed in person before any work starts.
Safety on and around a roof
Do not go up to look. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction work, and roofs, ladders and roof openings account for most of them. A roof that looks sound from the ground can have broken sheathing, rotten decking or a hidden soft spot that gives way under one footstep, and storm damage makes that more likely, not less.
Never walk a roof that is wet, frosted, mossy, or shedding loose granules: asphalt shingles are slick long before they look it, and a shallow pitch is no protection. Never go up after a storm while there is still wind, lightning, standing water or a downed power line anywhere near the house. Snow and ice make the same roof several times worse, and pulling at an ice dam from a ladder brings the ice down on the person pulling it. Keep well clear of the eaves in freezing weather for the same reason.
You can tell us a great deal without leaving the ground: look at the roof with binoculars, photograph what you can see from an upstairs window, and check the ceilings and the attic from inside. Let someone with fall protection and the right ladders do the rest. While work is going on, keep children and pets away from the drip line, keep vehicles out from under the eaves, and treat every nail, offcut and piece of flashing on the ground as sharp. If a ceiling is sagging or wet, stay out of the room under it until someone has looked at it.
Licensing, permits and insurance
Roofing is regulated differently in every state. Some license roofing as a trade of its own, some cover it under a general contractor licence, some under a home-improvement registration, and some leave it to cities and counties, so the requirement that applies in Virginia is the one in force where the property stands. Ask any contractor, including us, what they hold and check it with the issuing authority before work starts. Nothing on this Site is a claim to hold a licence, certification, approval or manufacturer accreditation. Ask us what we hold before work starts, and check it with the authority that issues it.
Replacing a roof normally needs a building permit and an inspection, and which office issues it depends on where the property sits; confirm it with your city or county building department. Shingle, membrane and metal manufacturers give their own warranties on their own terms, and most of them depend on the roof being installed, fastened and ventilated to the manufacturer's instructions; nothing on this Site creates, extends or substitutes for one.
On storm and hail work: we can document what we find and meet your adjuster at the property, but we are not public adjusters or insurance agents. We cannot appraise, negotiate or settle a claim for you, and in many states doing that without a licence is prohibited. Nothing on this Site offers to pay, waive, rebate or absorb an insurance deductible. Whether damage is covered is decided by your insurer under your policy, and information here is a summary, not legal, insurance or code advice.
